Capitan Tormenta, El [aka Captain Hurricane] (1936)

Director: John Reinhardt
Writers: José Luis Tortosa, Crane Wilbur and Gordon Ray Young (story "Captain Calamity", as Gordon Young)
Cast: Fortunio Bonanova [Cap't Bill Jones / Capitan Tormenta], Lupita Tovar [Madge Lewis], Juan Torena [Mike], Movita [Anyana], Romualdo Tirado [Hipo], José Luis Tortosa [Dr. James Kelly], Roy D'Arcy [Samson], George J. Lewis [Pedro], Barry Norton [Karl], Francisco Moreno [Alberto], Agostino Borgato [Trader Jim], José Pena [Jobblin], Rosa Rey [Madame], Alberto Gandero [Gandero - a Sailor]
Storyline: A Spanish-language version, El capitan Tormenta was filmed alongside Captain Calamity. Roy D'Arcy Juan Torena, Barry Norton and Movita reprised their roles (though most of the character names were changed). Fortunio Bonanova replaced Huston in the title role and Lupita Tovar served as Nixon's Spanish-language alternative, renamed Magda. Supposedly, producer Hirliman had wanted Tovar to play the female lead in both productions, but she only appeared in the Spanish version.

Captain Calamity [aka Captain Hurricane] (1936)

Director: John Reinhardt
Writers: Gordon Ray Young (story, as Gordon Young) and Crane Wilbur (screenplay)
Cast: Marian Nixon [Madge Lewis], George Houston [Cap't Bill Jones / Captain Calamity], Vince Barnett [Burp], Crane Wilbur [Dr. James Kelkey], Juan Torena [Mike], Movita [Annana], Roy D'Arcy [Samson, as Roy D'arcy], George J. Lewis [Black Pierre, as George Lewis], Margaret Irving [Mamie Gruen], Louis Natheaux [E.D. Joblin - Store Owner], Barry Norton [Carr], Lloyd Ingraham [Trader Jim], Alberto Gandero [Gandero - a Sailor, as Albert Gandero], Harold Howard [Guy Warren], Charles Moyer ['Mac' McKenzie - a Sailor], Bobbie  [Drunken Sailor (uncredited)], Gordon Jones [Henchman (uncredited)], Maria Kalamo [Servant (uncredited)], John Van Pelt [Potato Peeling Sailor (uncredited)]
Storyline: In the South Seas, Bill Jones, captain of the schooner "Marigold", is known as Captain Calamity as he is quick to fight or frolic. Stone broke on the island of Quica and with his ship in need or re-stocking, Bill accepts an ancient Spanish doubloon from a young Australian named Carr in exchange for taking him to Tapillo, where Carr can take a ship to Sydney. Bill gives the doubloon to trader Joblin for supplies, and does not bother to correct the trader's impression that he has found a fabulous horde of pirate gold. With Madame Gruen, a slatternly jade who runs a waterfront boarding house, and Samson, her oily paramour, Joblin schemes to seize Captain Bill's supposed treasure trove. Together, they gather a a crew of cutthroats, led by Black Pierre, leader of the scum of the waterfront dives, to seize the treasure. Bill also meets Dr. Kelkey, loser in many bouts with a brandy bottle, and his ward, Madge Lewis, on a mission to find the man who murdered and robbed her father in Australia... The color is a version of Cinecolor which favors blue and red and really looks quite lovely on the unrestored but very watchable print I viewed. Most prints have the first section of credits missing, and cuts in for the shots of the cast poking their heads through a life preserver, with their names printed on the preserver. A good example of early, good-looking color from a company other than Technicolor.

He is seen by a shepherd who warns the nearest town whose excitable population transform Jonathan's arrival into a full-fledged pirate invasion. The Alcade Don Emilio Perena leads the militia into shooting up their own town whilst Jonathan is later captured in the boudoir of Alcade's daughter Serafina. Jonathan is sentenced to death. When Serafina and the women of the town discover Jonathan's profession of dancing teacher, his execution is delayed until he teaches the waltz to the women of the town. Descobrimento do Brasil, O [aka Discovery of Brazil, The] (1936)

Director: Humberto Mauro
Writers: Affonso de Taunay (story), Bandeira Duarte (dialogue) and Humberto Mauro
Cast: Alvaro Costa [Pedro Álvares Cabral], Joao de Deus [Ayres Correa], Manoel Rocha [Pero Vaz Caminha], Alfredo Silva [Henrique de Coimbra], De Los Rios [Duarte Pacheco], Arthur Oliveira [Pedro Escobar], J. Silveira [Alfredo Cunha], Hélio Barroso [Edgar], Armando Duval [Nicolau Coelho / Bartolomeu Dias], Araçati, Costa Henrique, Humberto Mauro, Joao Mauro, Joao Baldi, Reginaldo Calmon, João Silva, Artur Castro, Alfredo Cunha
Storyline: The history of Brazil starts with indigenous people in Brazil. Europeans arrived in Brazil at the opening of the 16th century. The first European to colonize Brazil was Pedro Álvares Cabral on April 22, 1500 under the sponsorship of the Kingdom of Portugal. From the 16th to the early 19th century, Brazil was a colony and a part of the Portuguese Empire. The country expanded south along the coast and west along the Amazon and other inland rivers from the original 15 donatary captaincy colonies established on the northeast Atlantic coast east of the Tordesillas Line of 1494 (approximately the 46th meridian west) that divided the Portuguese domain to the east from the Spanish domain to the west. The country's borders were only finalized in the early 20th century. On September 7, 1822, the country declared its independence from Portugal and became Empire of Brazil. A military coup in 1889 established the First Brazilian Republic. The country has seen a dictatorship during Vargas Era (1930–1934 and 1937–1945) and a period of military rule (1964–1985) under Brazilian military government. Until 1529 Portugal had very little interest in Brazil mainly due to the high profits gained through commerce with India, China, and the East Indies. This lack of interest allowed traders, pirates, and privateers of several countries to poach profitable Brazilwood in lands claimed by Portugal, so the Portuguese Crown devised a system to effectively occupy Brazil, without paying the costs. Through the hereditary Captaincies system, Brazil was divided into strips of land that were donated to Portuguese noblemen, who were in turn responsible for the occupation and administration of the land and answered to the king. The system was a failure - only four lots were successfully occupied Pernambuco, São Vicente (later called São Paulo), Captaincy of Ilhéus and Captaincy of Porto Seguro. The captaincies gradually reverted to the Crown and became provinces and eventually states of the country. Starting in the 16th century, sugarcane grown on plantations called engenhos along the northeast coast (Brazil's Nordeste) became the base of Brazilian economy and society, with the use of slaves on large plantations to make sugar for export to Europe. At first, settlers tried to enslave the natives as labor to work the fields. The initial exploration of Brazil's interior was largely due to para-military adventurers, the bandeirantes, who entered the jungle in search of gold and Native slaves. However colonists were unable to sustainably enslave Natives, and Portuguese land owners soon turned to import millions of slaves from Africa. Mortality rates for slaves in sugar and gold enterprises[ambiguous] were dramatic, and there were often not enough females or proper conditions to replenish the slave population indigenously.

[cartoon] Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor (1936) [Popeye the Sailor Episode 41]

Director: Dave Fleischer and Willard Bowsky (animation director, uncredited)
Storyline: The legendary sailors Popeye and Sindbad do battle to see which one is the greatest. In this short, Sindbad the Sailor (presumably Bluto playing a "role") proclaims himself, in song, to be the greatest sailor, adventurer and lover in the world and "the most remarkable, extraordinary fellow", a claim that is inadvertently challenged by Popeye as he innocently sings his usual song while sailing by within earshot of Sindbad's island with Olive Oyl and J. Wellington Wimpy in tow. Sindbad orders his huge Roc, to kidnap Popeye's girlfriend, Olive Oyl, and wreck Popeye's ship, forcing him and Wimpy to swim to shore. Sinbad relishes making Olive his trophy wife, which is interrupted by Popeye's arrival. Sinbad then challenges the one-eyed sailor to a series of obstacles to prove his greatness, including fighting the Roc, a two-headed giant named Boola (an apparent parody reference to The Three Stooges), and Sindbad himself. Popeye makes short work of the bird and the giant, but Sindbad almost gets the best of him until Popeye produces his can of spinach, which gives him the power to soundly defeat Sindbad and proclaim himself "the most remarkable, extraordinary fella". A subtly dark running gag features the hamburger-loving Wimpy chasing after a duck on the island with a meat grinder, with the intention of grinding it up so that he can fry it into his favorite dish, but the duck not only escapes, but also snatches away Wimpy's last burger in retaliation when he gives up. After sending his giant bird, Rokh, to wreck Popeye's boat and kidnap Olive Oyl, Sindbad forces Olive to dance for him by firing buckshot at her feet with a pea-shooter. Popeye attempts to rescue her while J. Wellington Wimpy follows a duck around with a meat-grinder. After Popeye disposes of Rokh and Sindbad's two-headed, Yiddish-accented giant, Boola, it's a battle to the "finich" between the two legendary sailors.

They find a village of apparently honest, pious and simple folk, looked after benevolently by their philanthropic vicar Doctor Syn (Arliss). Syn is in fact the leader of the smugglers of the parish, using his cover as a man of the cloth to run a profitable ring whose dividends are used to better the lives of the local community. Collyer gradually comes to suspect what is going on, and a series of chases and confrontations takes place across the marshes, in which Syn and the smugglers always narrowly outwit their pursuers. Collyer finally discovers that Syn is none other than the notorious pirate Captain Clegg, thought to have been executed many years earlier. Still one step ahead, Syn destroys all incriminating evidence and he and his men make their escape. The Most Feared Pirate Gangster of His Time!

Cast: Oskar Homolka [Capt. Spencer [Cook (uncredited)], Leonard Sues [Native Boy (uncredited)], Jacques Vanaire [Assistant Port Doctor (uncredited)], Don Wayson [Man (uncredited)], Gloria Williams [Woman (uncredited)]]
Storyline: One of the strangest films to come from a major studio during the golden era of Hollywood, "Ebb Tide" was promoted as "the first South Seas drama in COLOR", and boasts an eclectic (to say the least) cast, including Oscar Homolka (in his US feature debut), Frances Farmer (in her only color film), Ray Milland, Barry Fitzgerald and Lloyd Nolan. Dour, pessimistic, and full of tortured close-ups of Homolka grimacing, this was probably not what movie-goers of 1937 were expecting. On the plus-side, the performances are riveting (though Homolka is difficult to understand at times), and the chance to see the ravishing Farmer in Technicolor splendor is worth wading through a turgid plot involving three ne'er-do-wells shanghaing a quarantined ship to the tropical paradise island of Tehua, where they meet madman Lloyd Nolan. There's also an exciting storm sequence which was the "Perfect Storm" of its day. Based on a story co-written by Robert Louis Stevenson. The only broadcast print in wide circulation is edited and is badly in need of color correction.

Storyline: During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, England is concerned by the impending arrival of the Spanish Armada. In 1588, relations between Spain and England are at breaking point. With the support of Queen Elizabeth I (Flora Robson), English privateers such as Sir Francis Drake regularly capture Spanish merchantmen bringing gold from the New World. Elizabeth's chief advisers are the Lord Treasurer, Lord Burleigh (Morton Selten), and her longtime admirer, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (Leslie Banks). Burleigh's 18-year-old granddaughter Cynthia (Vivien Leigh) is one of Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting, and the ageing queen is plagued by jealousy of the girl's beauty and vivacity. In a sea battle between the Spanish, led by Don Miguel (Robert Rendel), and the English, led by his old friend Sir Richard Ingolby (Lyn Harding) the English are captured. Miguel allows Richard's son Michael (Laurence Olivier) to escape. Michael washes ashore on Miguel's estate, and his wounds are tended to by Miguel's daughter Elena (Tamara Desni), who quickly becomes enamoured of the handsome Englishman. As the months pass, Michael recovers and laments being apart from Cynthia, his sweetheart, but is nonetheless impressed by Elena's charms. Miguel brings Michael the sad news that Sir Richard, his father, has been executed as a heretic. The grieving Michael denounces his rescuers and flees to England in a small fishing boat. When he is granted an audience with the Queen he urges her to fight the Spanish menace by whatever means necessary, and swears undying loyalty to her. Elizabeth is flattered by the young man's fervent devotion and later has an opportunity to take advantage of his offer of service when Hillary Vane (James Mason), an Englishman spying for Spain, is killed before the names of his English co-conspirators can be uncovered. Michael, disguised as Vane, goes to the court of King Philip II of Spain (Raymond Massey) to get the letters that will set into motion a plan to assassinate Elizabeth. At the palace Michael meets Elena. Her father has been killed by the English and she is now married to Don Pedro (Robert Newton), the palace governor. Elena keeps Michael's identity a secret as long as she can, but finally must tell her husband out of loyalty to him. Philip sees through Michael's disguise and orders his arrest. Pedro helps him escape so that it will not be discovered that his wife aided a heretic. While Michael is returning home, the Spanish Armada sails against England and Elizabeth addresses her army at Tilbury. Michael meets her there and reveals the names of the traitors. Elizabeth knights Michael before confronting the six traitors, inviting them to fulfill their plot and kill her. Overwhelmed with shame, they agree to accompany Michael on a mission to deploy fire ships in a night attack on the Armada, massed off the coast of England.

Fortunately, what's waiting for John in the treasure chest is a wildcat, which keeps him busy (despite breaks for the ice cream man and a low-flying plane) while the kids untie the Captain. A flashback reveals that Kidd was known to be a pirate and also known to have had a commission from William III at one time, which instructed him to act as a unit of the British Navy. A mystery, more intriguing than whether or not Kidd was hanged as a pirate or was hung because he failed in his trust to the Crown, was what became of the fabulous treasure Kidd took from the ship "Kedah Merchant".

Storyline: "The  Black Corsair" is based on the novel by Emilio Salgari, in which our Pithecusa is smuggled to a Caribbean island. It's a popular movie, but made no economy, with real ships and a collision of excellent effect. The island offers, as a backdrop to epic duels, views of the sea and beautiful and terrible storms. Of this first film the director recalls the scenes "scenes shot in Ischia, a beautiful island that I have in mind for its natural beauty. The climate of Ischia regenerated me a lot. We had to know the beautiful pine forests and to observe a peaceful people to his farm work. In the film I called for a small part the comic Polidor (...)". In the film, it was important to the long sequence in which Ciro Verratti, Lord of Ventimiglia, riding arena to the enchanting Maronti beach, for the first time presented to an audience of potential new tourists great islanders. The Ventimiglia brothers - the Black Corsair and the Red Corsair - sail the seas of the West Indies against the governor of Maracaibo. Killed by the Governor, the Red, the Black Corsair decides to settle definitively the tragic game assaulting Maracaibo. While sailing, he captures a Spanish galleon on board of which is, under another name, the governor's daughter. The Corsair is taken by the graces of the girl, but when he discovers his identity leaves her at sea in a lifeboat. The girl is saved and brought back to Maracaibo, where she learns, by the Governor, only to be his adopted daughter. So the Corsaro can marry her when, after a fierce battle, he take Maracaibo and kills the Governor. In a chronicle vintage it reads, "Islanders and foreigners have had a great surprise. In the port of Ischia were firmly moored two majestic ancient ships artistically decorated. A member of the Spanish fleet in 1600, the other belonging to a band of pirates. One hundred shady figures of pirates, after taking possession of the premises of the Office of the Stranger and establish the headquarters, turned boldly to the country. Whites, blacks, Japanese, tanned by the sea, restless eyes, face horribly scarred, armed to the teeth with rifles, pistols, swords, daggers, axes and hammers. Pushing guns and mortars, carried boxes and appliances. Islanders and tourists marveled at what was happening, almost been related the incident with the piratical exploits of past centuries. After a few hours of loss, the calm has returned to Port of Ischia. The pirates came just to make a great Italian film, The Black Corsair".

Ostrov sokrovishch [aka Treasure Island] (1938)

Directors: Vladimir Vaynshtok and David Bradley (English language version)
Writers: Oleg Leonidov (as O. Leonidov), Robert Louis Stevenson (novel "Treasure Island") and Vladimir Vaynshtok (writer)
Cast: Klavdiya Pugachyova [Jenny, as K. Pugachyova], Mikhail Klimov [Trelawney, as M. Klimov], Osip Abdulov [John Silver, as O. Abdulov], Nikolay Cherkasov [Billy Bones, as N. Cherkasov], Vladimir Yershov [Commander, as V. Yershov], Mikhail Tsaryov [Dr. Livesey, as M. Tsaryov], Anatoliy Bykov [Captain Smollett, as A. Bykov], Iona Bij-Brodsky [George Merry, as I. Levshina], Fyodor Ivanov [Pirate (uncredited)]
Storyline: An adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" with drastic changes to the plot. A group of English rebels searches for pirate's treasures to buy weapons for the civil war. Young Jim Hawkins finds himself serving with pirate captain Long John Silver in search of a buccaneer's treasure, in this short adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale. The Benbow Inn and young Hawkins, Billy Bones, the black spot, Doctor Livesey, the Hispaniola outfitted by Squire Trelawney, the voyage to Treasure Island, and the fight for the treasure. Many of the pirates familiar to us are there as well, including John Silver, Israel Hands, and George Merry. I won't spoil anything but I should mention some differences. The Benbow Inn is on the coast of Ireland, young Hawkins is Jenny Hawkins who goes on board as cabin boy "Jim", Doctor Livesey is an Irish rebel fighting for Irish independence from the English, Squire Trelawney as a rich landowner is a money-grubbing bad guy, and the Hispaniola sails out of Dublin. The purpose of the voyage is to help fund the Irish rebellion of the 1790s. I have seen over a dozen Treasure Island dramatizations and found this one particularly unique, entertaining, nicely filmed, and well performed, though very dated and in the style of films in the 1930s. Part musical with 4 songs, you see pirates singing and dancing.

The ship gets a radio message of a reward for capturing the pirate submarine. The crew sets out in planes to go looking, leaving Porky behind. Naturally, the sub comes after the ship, and defense is up to Porky. He manages to repel the boarding party and winches the sub onboard with a plunger.

Queer Cargo [aka Pirates of the Seven Seas] (1938)

Director: Harold D. Schuster
Writers: Patrick Kirwan, Noel Langley (play) and Walter Summers
Cast: Bertha Belmore [Henrietta Travers], Louis Borel [Benson], Frank Cochran [Ho Tang], Judy Kelly [Ann Warren], Kenneth Kent [Vibart], John Lodge [Captain Harley], Frank Pettingell [Dan], Geoffrey Toone [Lieutenant Stocken], Jerry Verno [Slops], Wylie Watson [Reverend James Travers]
Storyline: The British maritime meller Pirate of the Seven Seas first saw the light of day as Queer Cargo in 1938. John Lodge stars as Captain Harley, a slick pearl-smuggler saddled with a rebellious crew. Harley's men finally mutiny at the precise moment that their vessel is boarded by pirate leader Cabini (Kenneth Kent) and his band of cutthroats. Faced with choosing the lesser of two evils, Harley's crew finally decides to cast their lot with the captain, who has become the film's hero by default. Though filmed nearly two years before the outbreak of WW2, Pirate of the Seven Seas was foresighted enough to include a German villain in its cast of characters.

Storyline: Jamaica Inn is the headquarters of a gang of wreckers led by the innkeeper Joss Merlyn (Leslie Banks). The wreckers are responsible for a series of engineered shipwrecks in which they extinguish coastal warning beacons to cause ships to run aground on the rocky Cornish coast. Then they kill the surviving sailors and steal the cargo from the wrecks. Beautiful, young Mary Yellan (Maureen O'Hara) is travelling to Jamaica Inn in a carriage, but the driver is afraid to stop there and drives a long way past the inn in spite of her repeated demands that he stop. Instead, he drops her off near the home of the local squire and justice of the peace, Sir Humphrey Pengallan (Charles Laughton). She meets him and requests the loan of a horse so she can go back to Jamaica Inn. Pengallan warns her not to go there. Nevertheless, Mary says she just came from Ireland, and as the orphaned niece of Joss's wife Patience (Marie Ney), she intends to live at Jamaica Inn. Unable to convince her to stay, Pengallan accompanies Mary to Jamaica Inn. When Joss meets Mary, he tries to kiss her and push himself on her. Patience is distraught to learn her sister, Mary's mother, has died. When Mary tells Joss that Pengallan has accompanied her to Jamaica Inn, Joss goes upstairs and reports to Pengallan. We learn that Pengallan is the secret criminal mastermind behind the wrecking gang, who finds out when well-laden ships are passing near the coast, determines when and where the wrecks are to be done, disposes of the stolen cargo, and uses the booty to support his lavish lifestyle, passing a small fraction of the takings back to Joss and the gang. In another part of the inn, the gang convenes to discuss why they get so little money for their efforts. They suspect Jem Traherne (Robert Newton), a gang member who has been with them for only two months, of embezzling goods. They hang him from one of the rafters of the inn, but Mary cuts the rope afterwards and saves his life. Together, Traherne and Mary flee from the gang. They are almost recaptured and have to swim for their lives in order to escape. The next morning, they seek the protection of Pengallan, unaware that Pengallan is the secret leader of Joss's gang. Traherne reveals to Pengallan that he is actually an undercover law-officer on a mission to investigate the wrecks. Pengallan is alarmed, but he maintains his composure and pretends to join forces with Traherne. Mary overhears this conversation and goes to the inn to warn Patience that law enforcement knows about the wrecking gang and that she must flee in order to avoid being arrested as an accomplice. However, Patience refuses to leave her husband. Traherne and Pengallan also go to the Inn to search for evidence. While Traherne is searching the Inn, Joss and the gang return. Pengallan takes Joss aside and tells him a wreck must be performed immediately because he needs the money to escape to France now that the gang's activity has come to the attention of law enforcement. He advises Joss to go into hiding as well as soon as the wreck is complete. Joss and the gang go to do the wreck, leaving Traherne tied up. Joss also pretends to tie up Pengallan as a ploy to fool Traherne, but he secretly leaves Pengallan's hands free. After the gang leaves, Pengallan releases himself from his bonds and reveals himself to Traherne. He gives Patience a loaded pistol and instructs her to shoot Traherne if he gets loose. Pengallen then leaves. Traherne reasons with Patience, and promises to let her and Joss escape if she releases him. She agrees and unties him. He sets out for a nearby military camp to get backup. Meanwhile, Mary goes to the wrecking site, and re-lights the warning beacon which the wreckers had extinguished. The crew of the ship see the beacon and turn away; the ship does not wreck. The gang capture Mary and resolve to kill her for preventing the wreck. Joss, who has developed a reluctant admiration for her spirit even though she has thwarted his plans twice, rescues her from the gang and the two escape by horse-cart, but Joss is shot in the back while escaping and collapses when they reach Jamaica Inn. As Patience is about to tell Mary that Pengallan is the secret leader of the wrecking gang, Pengallan shoots and kills Patience from offstage. Joss then dies of his wound as well. While Mary is reeling from the shock of witnessing these two violent deaths, Pengallan reveals himself to her, takes her hostage, ties her hands behind her back, gags her, and tells her that he plans to keep her and take care of her now that she has no one else in the world. He drives her, still tied up and covered by a heavy cloak, to the harbor and they board a ship bound for France. The gang returns to Jamaica Inn to find Joss and Patience dead. Just then, Traherne arrives with a posse of soldiers, who take the gang into custody. Traherne goes to the harbor with some of his soldiers to rescue Mary, and Pengallan is cornered on the ship. He climbs to the top of a mast, where he clumsily drops his gun. As the soldiers climb up after him, he jumps to his death, shouting "Make way for Pengallan!" Traherne leads Mary away from the scene, and Pengallan's horrified butler (Horace Hodges) is left wondering to himself, with a memory of Pengallan's imperious voice ringing in his ears.

At his inauguration in 1829, plain folk are invited to celebrate. Cast: John Cherry [Maj. Gen. Stanley], Alma Kitchell [Ruth], Walter Preston [The Pirate King], Ray Heatherton [Frederic], Margaret Daum [Mabel], Harry Donaghy [Sergeant of Police], Paula Heminghaus [Edith], Carol Deis [Kate], Colin O'More [Samuel], Mildred Rose [Isabel]
Storyline: The Pirate Publisher – An International Burlesque that has the Longest Run on Record, from Puck, 1886: Gilbert is seen as one of the British authors whose works are stolen by the pirate publisher. The Pirates of Penzance was the only Gilbert and Sullivan opera to have its official premiere in the United States. At the time, American law offered no copyright protection to foreigners. After the pair's previous opera, H.M.S. Pinafore, achieved success in London in 1878, approximately 150 American companies quickly mounted unauthorised productions that often took considerable liberties with the text and paid no royalties to the creators. Gilbert and Sullivan hoped to forestall further "copyright piracy" by mounting the first production of their next opera in America, before others could copy it, and by delaying publication of the score and libretto. They succeeded in keeping for themselves the direct profits of the first American production of The Pirates of Penzance by opening the production themselves on Broadway, prior to the London production, and they also operated profitable US touring companies of Pirates and Pinafore. However, Gilbert, Sullivan, and their producer, Richard D'Oyly Carte, failed in their efforts, over the next decade, to control the American performance copyrights to Pirates and their other operas. Fiction and plays about pirates were ubiquitous in the 19th century. Walter Scott's The Pirate (1822) and James Fenimore Cooper's The Red Rover were key sources for the romanticised, dashing pirate image and the idea of repentant pirates. Both Gilbert and Sullivan had parodied these ideas early in their careers. Sullivan had written a comic opera called The Contrabandista, in 1867, about a hapless British tourist who is captured by bandits and forced to become their chief. Gilbert had written several comic works that involved pirates or bandits. In Gilbert's 1876 opera Princess Toto, the title character is eager to be captured by a brigand chief. Gilbert had translated Jacques Offenbach's operetta Les brigands, in 1871. As in Les brigands, The Pirates of Penzance absurdly treats stealing as a professional career path, with apprentices and tools of the trade such as the crowbar and life preserver.

Figlia del corsaro verde, La [aka Daughter of the Green Pirate, The] (1940)

Director: Enrico Guazzoni
Writers: Nino Angioletti (adaptation), Alessandro De Stefani (screenplay) and Emilio Salgari (novel)
Cast: Doris Duranti [Manuela], Fosco Giachetti [Carlos de la Riva], Camillo Pilotto [Zampa di ferro], Mariella Lotti [Isabella], Enrico Glori [El Rojo], Sandro Ruffini [Don Luis, il governatore], Tina Lattanzi [Donna Mercedes, moglie del governatore], Polidor [Golia], Carmen Navasqués [Carmen, la danzatrice, as Carmen Navasquez], Ernesto Almirante [Il precettore delle educante, as Luigi Almirante], Primo Carnera [El Cabezo], Mario Siletti [Il segretario del governatore], Nino Marchetti [Ramon], Giulio Battiferri [Un pirata], Ori Monteverdi [Grazia]
Storyline: The film, directed by Enrico Guazzoni, was based on a novel by Emilio Sálgari, author of adventure books widely read by youngsters in Italy. Fosco Giachetti is Carlos, son of the governor in a South American outpost under Spanish rule (Maracaibo, in what is now Venezuela.) To make amends for his philandering lifestyle, Carlos assists his father by infiltrating a pirate band that is threatening the stability of domain. He wants to bring these bandits to their heels. Of course he falls in love with Manuela, daughter of the Corsaro Verde (Green Pirate) who had been executed by the governor. Manuela is played by the legendary diva-darling of Mussolini's regime, Doris Durante. In her autobiography 'Il romanzo della mia vita', Durante reveals that she was carrying on an affair with a doctor form Lucca during the entire time the film was being shot in the Tirrenia studios. But that's another story. The movie itself is very appealing in a top-of-the-line B-film sort of way, replete with dueling, ship-storming piracy with some badly-directed swordsmanship, superficial action, cartoon-strip characters. There is a fight to the death between Carlos and a dude called El Cabezo. El Cabezo is played by Primo Carnera, former Italian boxing champion. But the film appeals mainly for the face, that devastating diva-face of Doris Durante. She is a true icon of the Italian cinema, and whenever she is on screen, you cannot take your eyes off her. Some institution should launch a major retrospective of all her work, especially in America, where she is sadly unknown.

Storyline: The film begins with King Philip II of Spain (Montagu Love) declaring his intention to destroy England and after this "puny rockbound island as barren and treacherous as her Queen" is out of the way, he believes that world conquest will follow: he says his great wall map, one day, "will have ceased to be a map of the world; it will be Spain". He sends one of his courtiers, Don Alvarez (Claude Rains), as his ambassador to allay the suspicions of Queen Elizabeth I (Flora Robson) about the great armada he is building to invade England. In England, some of the Queen's ministers plead with her to build a fleet, which she hesitates to do in order to spare the purses of her subjects. The ambassador's ship is captured en route to England by the Albatross and her captain, Geoffery Thorpe (Errol Flynn). Don Alvarez and his niece, Dona María (Brenda Marshall), are taken aboard and transported to England. Thorpe is immediately enchanted by Dona María and gallantly returns her plundered jewels. Her detestation of him softens as she too begins to fall in love. Don Alvarez is granted an audience with the Queen and complains about his treatment; Dona María is accepted as one of her maids of honour. The "Sea Hawks", a group of English privateers who loot Spanish ships for "reparations" appear before the Queen, who scolds them (at least publicly) for their piratical attacks and for endangering the peace with Spain. Captain Thorpe finally appears and (in private) proposes a plan to seize a large caravan of Spanish gold in the New World and bring it back to England. The Queen is wary of Spain's reaction, but allows Thorpe to proceed. Suspicious of Thorpe's expedition, Lord Wolfingham (Henry Daniell), one of the Queen's ministers (and a secret Spanish collaborator), sends a spy to try to discover where the Albatross is really heading, but to no avail; the courtiers are told that Thorpe is going on a trading expedition up the River Nile in Egypt. Upon visiting the chartmaker responsible for the charts for Thorpe's next voyage, Don Álvarez and Lord Wolfingham determine that he is really sailing to the Isthmus of Panama and order Don Álvarez's Spanish captain to sail ahead to set up an ambush. When the Albatross reaches its destination, the ships is spotted by a native who reports it to the Spanish Governor. Part of Thorpe's crew seizes the caravan, but they fall into a well-laid trap and are driven into the swamps. Thorpe and a few others survive and return to their ship, only to find it in Spanish hands. Thorpe and his crew are returned to Spain, tried by the Inquisition, and sentenced to the galleys for the rest of their lives. In England, Don Álvarez informs the Queen of Thorpe's fate, causing his niece to faint. The Queen and Don Álvarez exchange heated words, and she expels him from her court. On the Spanish galley, Thorpe meets an Englishman named Abbott, who was captured trying to uncover evidence of the Armada's true purpose. Through cunning, the prisoners take over the ship during the night. They board another ship in the same harbor, where an emissary has stored secret incriminating plans. Thorpe and his men capture both and sail back to England with the plans in hand. Upon reaching port, Thorpe tries to warn the Queen. A carriage bringing Don Álvarez to the ship which, unknown to him, Thorpe had captured, also brings his niece. Don Álvarez boards the ship and is held prisoner, while Captain Thorpe, dressed in the uniform of a Spanish courtier, sneaks into the carriage carrying Dona María, who has decided to stay in England and wait for Thorpe's return. The two finally declare their love for each other, and María helps Thorpe to sneak into the palace. However, Lord Wolfingham's spy, who had escorted the ambassador and his niece, spots Thorpe and alerts the castle guards to stop the carriage and take Thorpe prisoner. Thorpe escapes and enters the Queen's residence, fending off guards all the while. Eventually, Thorpe runs into Lord Wolfingham and, after a sword fight, kills the traitor. With Dona María's assistance, Thorpe reaches the Queen and provides proof of King Phillip's intentions. Elizabeth knights Captain Thorpe for his gallantry, with Dona María present, and declares her intention to build a great fleet to oppose the Spanish threat. The film was colorized in 1986. Colorized versions have been broadcast on American television and distributed on VHS tape, but only the black-and-white versions, both edited (109 minutes) and restored/uncut (127 minutes), have been released in DVD formats. Currently there are no plans to release the colorized version on DVD.
