Writers: Louis O. Coxe (based upon the play: "Billy Budd"), Robert H. Chapman (based upon the play: "Billy Budd"), Herman Melville (from the novel: "Billy Budd, Foretopman"), Peter Ustinov (screenplay), DeWitt Bodeen (screenplay, as Dewitt Bodeen) and Robert Rossen (screenplay, uncredited)
Cast: Robert Ryan [John Claggart - Master of Arms], Peter Ustinov [Edwin Fairfax Vere - Post Captain Royal Navy], Melvyn Douglas [The Dansker - Sailmaker], Paul Rogers [Philip Seymour - First Lieutenant], John Neville [Julian Radcliffe - Second Lieutenant], David McCallum [Steven Wyatt - Gunnery Officer], Ronald Lewis [Enoch Jenkins - Maintopman], Lee Montague [Squeak - Assistant to Mr. Claggart], Thomas Heathcote [Alan Payne - Maintopman], Ray McAnally [William O'Daniel - Maintopman, as Ray McAnnally], Robert Brown [Arnold Talbot - Maintopman], John Meillon [Neil Kincaid - Maintopman], Cyril Luckham [Alfred Hallam - Captain of Marines], Niall MacGinnis [Nathaniel Graveling - Ship's Master, Rights of Man, as Niall McGinnis], Victor Brooks [Amos Leonard - First Mate, Rights of Man]
Storyline: Billy is an innocent, naive seaman in the British Navy in 1797. When the ship's sadistic master-at-arms is murdered, Billy is accused and tried. H.M.S. Avenger is headed into battle against the French fleet during the Napoleonic Wars, and the dark shadow of two recent mutinies in the English fleet concern Captain Vere. He relies on his cruel and often sadistic Master-at-Arms John Claggert to maintain what he believes to be tenuous order and discipline aboard the ship. When a new seaman, Billy Budd, is pressed into service from a passing merchantman, his innocent, happy-go-lucky attitude quickly endears him to both his messmates as well as the ship's officers. However, his charismatic naivete seems to bother Claggert, whose perverse depravity makes him resent Billy's good-natured purity, especially after the teenager's promotion to fore-top captain. The mean-spirited Claggert unfairly plots to put him on report and ultimately perjures himself when he accuses Billy of conspiring to mutiny.

As the Captain gets into his investigation, mysterious swamp phantoms cloud up the real issue which seems plain enough to see. Captain Collier suspects that the odd village vicar might be hiding something, and what better way to do that than by fortuitous ghosts to scare away the curious, or by posing as someone he is not?

Dominatore dei sette mari, Il [aka Seven Seas to Calais] (1962)
Directors: Rudolph Maté and Primo Zeglio
Writer: Filippo Sanjust
Cast: Rod Taylor [Sir Francis Drake], Keith Michell [Malcolm Marsh], Edy Vessel [Arabella Ducleau], Terence Hill [Babington, as Mario Girotti], Basil Dignam [Sir Francis Walsingham], Anthony Dawson [Lord Burleigh], Gianni Cajafa [Tom Moon], Irene Worth [Queen Elizabeth I], Arturo Dominici [Don Bernardino de Mendoza, the Spanish Ambassador], Marco Guglielmi [Fletcher], Esmeralda Ruspoli [Mary of Scotland], Rossella D'Aquino [Potato], Umberto Raho [King Philip of Spain], Aldo Bufi Landi [Vigeois]
Storyline: Rod Taylor plays Sir Francis Drake in this swashbuckling historical adventure. It's an Italian film with a full cast of Elizabethan-era characters. At the outset, Capt. Francis Drake sets sail in pursuit of the Spanish and their treasure, with the backing of Queen Elizabeth (Irene Worth). After weeks at sea, in which he withstands an ill-founded mutiny attempt, Drake and his crew outwit and overpower the Spaniards and take their gold. Upon his return, Drake earns knighthood and the affection and admiration of the queen. The action doesn't end there. Treachery is afoot, but it's thwarted by Drake and his men. And the movie concludes with a pretty spectacular cannon battle between the outnumbered British and the Spanish Armada. At the end, Drake sails off to sea for more glorious adventure. Viewed today, a scene involving New World natives looks silly. But overall, it's a stirring film, and Taylor gives a hearty, convincing performance as the heroic sea-captain/explorer/privateer.

When Guinness tries to modify Bogarde's sadistic adherence to discipline, Bogarde responds by mistreating Guinness' cabin-boy son, knowing that the captain cannot intervene under the edicts of British maritime law. During an incipient mutiny, Bogarde is accidently killed, and Guinness knows that the crewmen responsible must hang once they reach shore. But after these same men perform courageously in battle, Guinness suffers a crisis of conscience: How can he condemn these fearlessly patriotic men to death, as he knows he must? Based on the novel Mutiny by Frank Tilsley.
